Meet the Author
Bevery Cleary is a prolific author of more than 30 fiction books for children and young adults. Some of her memorable characters include Henry Huggins, Beatrice Quimby, Ramona Quimby, Ribsy, and Ralph S. Mouse. She was awarded the Library of Congress Living Legends award for her significant enrichment of America's cultural heritage.
Beverly Cleary's given name is Beverly Atlee Bunn; she married Clarence T. Cleary in 1940, and they had twins. Mrs. Cleary became a widow as of 2004, but she still lives in Carmel, California, and she is 90 years old.
She was inspired to write childrens' books when she was working as a full-time librarian in Yakima, Washington. A lot of children were trying to find some of the same books that she wanted to read as a young child. Because of all these requests for good books, she decided to write her first book, Henry Huggins. All the children who visited her at the library were delighted.
From that first book her career blossomed, and her books are now available in 14 languages in over 20 countries. She has also won the Newberry Medal and the Laura Ingalls Wilder award. Her story goes to show you that anyone with a little imagination and desire can write great books. In essence, if you're unhappy with what's out there, write your own story.
